Garage door insulation influences how a door performs throughout the year. Beyond thermal performance, the insulation built into the door panels can also affect panel strength, durability, and how smoothly the door operates.

Richards-Wilcox residential garage doors are available in several insulation configurations. Each construction type is designed to suit different applications, from detached garages where insulation may not be necessary to highly insulated doors used in garages connected to living spaces.

Neufoam™ Polyurethane-Insulated Garage Doors

Most Richards-Wilcox residential garage doors are built with Neufoam™ polyurethane insulation, which provides the highest level of insulation offered within the lineup.

During manufacturing, polyurethane insulation is injected between the inner and outer steel layers of the door section. As the material expands, it fills the interior space and bonds to the steel surfaces. This process forms a solid panel structure that improves both insulation performance and door rigidity.

Because the insulation becomes part of the door panel structure, polyurethane-insulated doors offer increased strength and help reduce vibration during operation. These models provide enhanced structural strength and higher insulation levels compared with other garage door constructions.

  • Weatherlock™ Section Joint: R-W’s modified tongue and groove joint moves the joint closer to the exterior of the door face to limit air and water infiltration, while providing unyielding section strength and integrity.
  • Bulb Seal: Prevents air leaks

Polystyrene-Insulated Garage Doors

Polystyrene insulation is installed as rigid insulation panels within the door sections. This construction improves thermal performance compared with non-insulated doors while keeping the door relatively lightweight.

Doors with polystyrene insulation may be selected for garages where some insulation is beneficial but the highest insulation level is not required. These doors offer improved thermal performance compared with single-layer construction while maintaining dependable operation.

Comparing Garage Door Insulation Options

Different insulation levels are suited to different types of garage spaces. In general, higher insulation levels are often selected when temperature stability or quieter door operation is important. Lower insulation levels may be appropriate for detached garages or buildings used primarily for vehicle storage.
